SPECIFIC ENTRY INFORMATION

ENTRY FORM: Complete ALL information requested. Social Security numbers are required for processing of your livestock entry. Children must use their own social security number. Parents of youth exhibitors are encouraged to assist children in completing their entries to include all projects completed or near completion. Locate an accurate description of your entry under the proper Department listings in this handbook. Record the Department number, Section number, class number and the descriptive wording as shown. In many instances you will want to enter exhibits of anticipated production (i.e. flowers, crops, projects near completion, etc.) — these types of entries are acceptable and it is understandable if you are not always able to exhibit some of those items because of the "unpredictable" and no penalty is assessed for lack of an entry. Be sure to REVIEW the General Rules (Refer to table of contents) and the Special Information at the beginning of each Department so that your entry will not be disqualified for any reason. DO NOT HESITATE TO CALL FOR HELP OR INFORMATION. A contact person is listed for each department or you may contact the general fair office at gdsfairexhibits@yahoo.com or (570) 676-4047 or 676-5563.

Entrants who wish to receive their tags by mail (instead of picking them up at fairgrounds) MUST PRE-REGISTER BY JULY 26 and include a $2.00 check made payable to GDS Fair to cover postage and handling.

ENTRY TAGS: Entry tags will be prepared for each item you have listed on your entry form (except livestock) and may be picked up on the fairgrounds (in the Ag hall- brick building) before the fair on any one of the following days:

Sunday, August 24, 2008 from Noon until 6:00 PM

DEPARTMENT 22: Follow the individual entry procedure indicated in the information provided for the contest listed.

Attach entry tag securely to each item being exhibited. (Note: it is suggested that if you will be on location at the fairgrounds preparing your entries, you come equipped with supplies such as tape, string and/or safety pins to aid you in accomplishing this task.) Take each item to the proper Exhibit Hall and DEPARTMENT in which it is entered. If you need help, the Department personnel on duty will be glad to provide assistance. Be sure to allow enough time to take your exhibits to the different buildings by the deadline of 7:00 PM on SUNDAY — we cannot make exceptions to this rule since the Department personnel need the time to arrange exhibits for judging.

GENERAL RULES

For the convenience of exhibitors, entries are received SUNDAY between 12:00 noon and 7:00 PM. Since judging is scheduled on Monday, exhibit halts will not be closed to the public on opening day of the fair. We ask your cooperation in using the front parking lot when bringing your entries to the fair. This will help us to assure your safety and eliminate vehicle congestion on the fairgrounds.
1.   All exhibitors agree to be bound by the rules and regulations of the Greene-Dreher-Sterling Fair.
2.  The Fair Management reserves the right to amend or add to these rules and regulations as its judgment may determine.
3.   NO animals will be accepted without Health Certificates. See additional information under Health Rules for Livestock.
4.   Entries must be made according to classification. It shall be the responsibility of the exhibitor to make known the PROPER NAME of the article or breed of livestock to be entered. Any item entered improperly will be disqualified to receive a prize and the judges will mark the correct name on the entry tag for the benefit of the owner so the same mistake in entering will not be made a second time.
5.   All entries must be grown, produced, or made in Pennsylvania since the close of the last Fair and by the exhibitor only. If the Fair management believes any exhibit was shown previously, that exhibit may be refused and/or disqualified for judging.
6.   Exhibitors may not enter more than one entry for competition in any one class.
7.   Premiums, as listed, may be given for exhibits. In cases where there is no competition, judges may give an award as they deem the exhibit is worthy to receive. Same rule applies where there are fewer entries in any class than the number of premiums offered.
THE DECISION OF THE JUDGES SHALL BE FINAL IN ALL CASES; however, any mistakes, fraud, misrepresentation, or collusion should be reported in writing to the Exhibit Committee as soon as possible for review by the committee.
8.   Superintendents of Departments reserve the right to refuse any entry and to ban from competition animals, vegetables, flowers, products and manufactured articles of decidedly inferior quality; and those not possessing sufficient merit to warrant recognition.
9.   The Fair Management may, at anytime, order the removal of any exhibit or part of an exhibit in bad condition, and any article unfit to show may be excluded. Food products cannot be polluted with any substance or chemical that causes them to be poisonous and/or unfit for food.
10. During the judging, buildings (except for livestock areas) are to be closed to everyone except Fair Officials, Judges, Pennsylvania Fair Fund Officials and necessary attendants. Any exhibitors interfering with the judges while making awards shall forfeit any premium to which they would otherwise be entitled.
11. After judging, all exhibits will be displayed under the exhibitor's name.
12. Best of Show will be given in each Department
13. No exhibits, except livestock, may be removed at any time before 9:00 AM on Tuesday, the day after Labor Day. NO EXCEPTIONS!! All vegetables, fruits, nuts and baked goods become the property of the Fair. All entries MUST BE PICKED UP between 9:00 AM and 12:00 noon or 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM (including poultry and rabbits) on Tuesday after Labor Day. The Fair Management will not be responsible for any exhibits not picked up within the specified times.
14. Reasonable care will be taken to protect alt exhibits on display from injury and damage; but the Fair is not, in any way, to be held responsible for accidents, loss or damage by water, fire, theft, etc., whatever the cause or extent of loss.
15. Premiums, except livestock, will be paid on Thursday from 6 PM to 8 PM and on Friday from 11 AM to 1 PM during fair week. Checks will be mailed to all exhibitors if not picked up at the fairgrounds at the appointed times. Livestock premiums will be paid by check, which will be sent by mail. Occasionally a Merit Award or Honorable Mention ribbon is awarded; however, no premium is paid.
16. ALL CHECKS NOT CASHED WITHIN SIXTY (60) DAYS WILL BE CONSIDERED VOID AND A DONATION TO THE FAIR. YOU MUST HAVE EXHIBITOR NUMBER AND IDENTIFICATION TO PICK UP CHECK(S).
17. In the event the Fair Association does not receive sufficient income, for any reason, awards may be reduced.
18. Any exhibitor may be required to prove the ability to reproduce any entry in any Department in the presence of a qualified person.
(Not responsible for typographical errors throughout this Handbook.)

ALL ANIMAL HEALTH REGULATIONS

All animals admitted to fair shall be identified by a unique and permanent ear tag, tattoo, brand or records of unique physical attributes. Animals known to be infected with or exposed to any contagious, infectious or external parasitic disease, and animals restricted by quarantine may not be assembled for show purposes.
All animals admitted to fair must comply with applicable slate (7 PA Code) or federal (9 CFR) rules. All cloven-hoof animals, not subject to 7 PA Code or 9 CFR, including members of the deer and damilid families, shall have been born in Pennsylvania or resided in Pennsylvania for at least six (6) months and shall be brucellosis and tuberculosis tested (negative) by an accredited veterinarian within 60 days of admission to the show.
Animals presented for exhibition will be subject to inspection by show officials and will be rejected if evidence of infectious contagious or parasitic disease is apparent or if health certification or identification documentation is not acceptable.
All animals should be held in isolation for at least 30 days after return to the herd of origin.

IMPORTANT: ALL HEALTH PAPERS MUST BE CHECKED BEFORE UNLOADING
Be sure to use only grooming products that are approved for use on meat and dairy animals when fitting your animals for show. Unapproved products may contain ingredients that result in unacceptable residues in the meat or milk. If you are not certain that a product is residue safe and approved for use on meat or dairy animals, do not use it!
""Important!*** If upon slaughter, treatment with drugs, biologics or any chemical from fitting products, is the cause of condemnation of a carcass, the loss of the carcass and any other damages will be borne by the exhibitor.

GUIDELINES FOR CARE OF ANIMALS
1. It is the responsibility of each exhibitor to care for animals in a manner that is responsible and ethical. Following are some guidelines for the treatment of animals exhibited at the show.
a. Restraining Animals
i. Animals should be tied or penned in a manner that will not hurt the animal or restrict its breathing in any way.

ii. Animals should be tied so that all four feet are firmly on the ground and they have enough room to stand comfortably and lie down.

iii. Animals should be tied so that they are not able to injure animals tied near them
iv. Animals unaccustomed to each other should not be penned together.
b. Handling - Any type of rough handling which could harm the animal is prohibited. The use of whips, canes, and shows sticks should be restricted to showing only and then is used only to guide the animals, not punish them. Remember that animals will respond quicker and better to quiet, gentle handling, than loud, rough handling.
c. Bedding - All animals should have bedding that is dry and clean. Pens should be cleaned regularly to keep the animals clean and comfortable. If nontraditional bedding such as carpeting is used, it should be regularly cleaned (at least twice daily) to keep the pen free from manure.
d. Feeding & Water - Animals should be well fed and have access to clean water regularly. Realizing that many market animals must have restricted amounts of feed to maintain the proper weight, animals must be fed adequate amounts of feed to meet the animal's basic requirements. Animals not allowed reasonable access to feed and water will be disqualified from the show.
e. Transportation - Animals should be transported in a way that is both safe and considerate of the animal's well being.
f. Blanket/Sweat Collars - Any type of material such as blankets or sweat collars should be large enough to permit normal body functions such as breathing, eating, drinking or lying down.
g. Health - It is the responsibility of the exhibitor to provide proper health care for their animals through routine inspection and consultation with health care professionals. The improper or illegal use of drugs or antibiotics is prohibited. If medication is indicated, be sure to follow the label directions and allow more than the stated withdrawal time.

EXHIBITTORS SHOULD REFER TO GENERAL RULES AND SPECIFIC  & ADDITIONAL INFORMATION LISTED IN EACH DEPARTMENT
